Sunbury Jets’ youth league side overcame a small hiccup to seal their spot in the Big V youth league women’s division 2 grand final series.
The Jets’ got off to the best possible start against Southern Peninsula Sharks in their semi final series last week, winning game one 59-39.
Returning home on Saturday night with the chance to wrap up the series in two games, the Jets didn’t find it as easy.
After trailing for most of the game, the Jets hit the front late in the game, but couldn’t hold on, losing 54-53.
Jets’ coach Andrew Seidel said the side responded well from the unexpected loss.
“We may have been a little too confident after game one,” he said.
“We couldn’t shoot last night, shooting at 20 per cent.
“But it gave the girls real confidence that we lost by only one point, despite not playing well.”
Chloe Angove starred for the Jets shooting 28 points, at 57 per cent from the field.
After a nervous night, the Jets returned to the court on Sunday for game three of the series and it was the Jets we’ve come to know.
The Jets dominated and played the ‘complete team effort’ to win 62-35 and seal a grand final spot.
With two big wins in the series, every Jets player got plenty of court time.
“It was something that crossed my mind and I tried to get everyone into the game early,” Seidel said.
“With the game being a blow out I was able to play the bench for the last seven to eight minutes of the game.”
Emily Achter top scored with 16 points missing just one shot, with all but one player scoring.
The grand final series against Blackburn Vikings, will be the Jets second grand final series in three years.
Only two players from that team the 2015 are part of this year’s side. Half the team was part of the Jets side which lost in the semi finals last year.
Blackburn won through to the grand final, winning game three of their semi final series in double overtime against Casey Cavaliers. Just six points separated the two teams across the three games.
Seidel said there was plenty of confidence in the side heading in the best of three grand final series. Game one is at Blackburn this weekend, followed by game two, and if needed game three, at Sunbury the following weekend.
The Jets won the head-to-head ledger, 2-1 during the regular season.
