It was a strong return to the court for the Sunbury Jets in Big V women’s state championship division.
After a weekend off due to the Queen’s Birthday holiday, the Jets continued their good form with a solid 89-72 win.
Jets coach Kennedy Kereama said he was happy with the performance. He said they had used the week off as chance to get the players a bit of break.
“You always risk coming out of a break losing that momentum [but] there wasn’t much to be disappointed with,” he said.
The Jets led by four points at quarter-time, before blowing the game open in the middle two quarters. They led by 23 points at the last break.
Kereama said they were strong at both ends of the court.
“Our defence was certainly where we needed to be,” he said. “Our offensive was good and we shot at a high clip from the perimeter for most of the game.”
Orla O’Reilly top scored with 22 points as four players finished with double figures.
All players got on the court.
“You coach to win first and then you look for opportunities for other players to be rewarded,” Kereama said. “As much as you can, you want to get everyone on the court and qualify them for finals.”
The win is the Jets eighth in a row, placing them second on the ladder.
Kereama said they weren’t getting too far ahead of themselves as they search for a fourth straight championship.
“There’s still a lot of basketball to come,” he said. “A lot can happen. If we keep tracking the way we are, we will be OK.”
Meanwhile, the Sunbury Jets’ division 1 men’s side went two from two on the weekend.
On Saturday night, the Jets beat the Bellarine Storm 85-78 and then they beat the Whittlesea Pacers on Sunday, 72-51.
