The Sunbury Jets have extended their winning streak to seven after claiming the points in a double header in Big V men’s division 1.
Having moved to the top of the table on the back of their hot form, the Jets faced two tests at the weekend.
The first was against bottom side Latrobe City Energy. Despite sitting at opposite ends of the table, the match was anything but one-sided.
It was a only a strong last quarter that would get the Jets over the line, 87-81.
The Energy led by six points at quarter-time and were still in front at three-quarter time.
The Jets, though, saved their best for last, outscoring the Energy 25-15 in the final quarter to seal the win.
Ish Sanders top scored for the Jets with 25 points, playing all 40 minutes.
Kris Blicavs and Ivanne Loncaric also scored double figures.
The Jets backed it up on Sunday against the Keysborough Cougars.
After a slow start the previous night, the Jets were faster out of the blocks this time and led by six points at quarter-time.
The lead was up to 11 at the main break. The Cougars had their best quarter in the third, reducing the margin back to six points.
The Jets steadied in the last quarter to take the margin back out, eventually winning 87-75.
There was no rest for Sanders, who again played all 40 minutes, this time scoring 35 points.
Blicavs and Loncaric again scored double figures, while Arthur Trousdell scored 18 points off the bench.
The wins give the Jets a 12-3 record. This week they host Collingwood All Stars.
The Jets state championship women’s side had no trouble against the lowly ranked Warrnambool Mermaids.
The Jets set the tone early with a 26-13 first quarter and it was a sign of things to come.
They kept the Mermaids to just eight points in the second quarter as they extended the lead to 29 points at the main break.
The Jets went on to win 99-46.
Every player took to the court, with all but one player scoring. Orla O’Reilly top scored with 23 points, while Courtney Duever, Josie Stockill and Lynn Leaupepe also scored double figures.
Like the men, the Jets women are on a seven game winning streak and sit second on the ladder. The Jets’ youth league men’s side had a tough weekend, losing both their matches.
They lost to the Ballarat Miners 133-95 and then to the Altona Gators 114-98.
The Sunbury Jets youth league women came from behind to beat the Knox Raiders 82-77.
