Sunbury made the most of its new state-of-the-art facility, as it came away with victory in Bowls Victoria pennant, division 1, section 2.
With rain falling across Melbourne, most matches across all divisions were called off but playing at home, Sunbury moved from its outside green to its new indoor facility, allowing
its match with Whittlesea (2) to go ahead.
Having lost their first match last week, Sunbury bounced back and returned to the winners’ list, 78 (14)-68 (4).
Sunbury’s David Glennon said to come away with 14 points, with all but one other match not going ahead, was massive for them.
Previously, if less than half the games were completed, all teams would get nine points for a draw, whether they played or not.
Bowls Victoria changed that rule during the off season, with results standing no matter how many matches were completed.
“The rules have changed and we now get the benefit of getting the points,” Glennon said.
“We picked up five points on nearly everyone else. We close the gap on the top side now.”
Todd Trewarne’s rink was the big winner, winning 27-14. Lee Welsey, who was deputising with Mark Cowan unavailable, led his rink to an 18-13 win.
Jay Bye-Norris lost 25-18, while Carla Krizanic had her first loss of the season, 16-15.
Glennon said Sunbury had a bigger lead throughout the day and while Whittlesea came back late, he said Sunbury had never looked like losing.
Lincoln Conduit, who was lead in Wesley’s rink, and Marc Bullows, who was the second in Trewarne’s rink, were the standouts.
Sunbury remains in second position, 10 points behind MCC.
Altona Sports was the other winner in that section, beating Richmond Union.
Sunbury’s top side this week faces Glenroy.
It then has a bye, with the Vic Open being held at Shepparton.
Sunbury will have several bowlers competing including Dylan Filuk, Todd Trewarne, Damien Hodor and Geoffrey Stewart in
the men’s singles and Lisa Trewarne in the women’s singles.
Filuk, Todd and Shane Trewarne, Hodor and Alf Muscat are all competing in the men’s pairs,while Sophie Kurzman and Lisa Trewarne are teaming up in the women’s pairs.
Several bowlers are also competing in the triples events.
While Sunbury was lucky to get on the green on Saturday, there was no action in the Central Highlands Bowls Division, with all matches
washed out.
