There was some big results in the local football competitions across Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges on Saturday. Here’s a quick look at what happened.
RDFL
The race for finals spots in the Riddell District Football League has hotted up with Broadford now well and truly in the mix.
With the Sunbury Kangaroos and Macedon losing to Diggers Rest and Romsey respectively, Broadford is now equal on points with both sides.
For a while it looked like Broadford was headed for a shock loss to Wallan, but came from behind late in the last quarter to get the win.
Romsey bounced back from last week’s loss against Riddell, with a hard fought win in muddy conditions at Macedon.
Diggers Rest jumped out of the blocks against the Kangaroos with a seven to two goal opening quarter and maintained that lead all day.
Rupertswood and Riddell had massive wins over Lancefield and Melton Centrals, while Woodend-Hesket recorded its fourth win of the season against Rockbank.
Ballarat FL
The Sunbury Lions suffered its second successive loss, this time going down to Bacchus Marsh.
Only two to three goals separated the sides all day, but the Lions found themselves behind for most of the second half and couldn’t get in front. Adam Short was best for the Lions.
The loss sees the Lions slip out of the top six ahead of a game against North Ballarat City next weekend.
Bendigo FL
Gisborne has kept its slight finals hopes alive with a 43 point win over South Bendigo.
The Bulldogs didn’t have it all their own way as they were held goal less in the second quarter.
Tom May was best on ground.
The Bulldogs are a game behind fifth placed Kyneton.
The Tigers lost to Golden Square by 68 points.
EDFL
East Sunbury was left to rue a scoreless first quarter against Coburg Districts in the Essendon District Football League division 2.
Giving the Lions a 30 point head start heading into the second quarter, the Thunder outscored them after that point but they still fell 19 points short.
TAC Cup
The Calder Cannons gained some revenge of the Oakleigh Chargers taking the points in the rematch of last year’s grand final.
The Cannons kicked five goals to two in the second half to secure the 20 point win. Lachlan Bramble was best on ground.
