St Anthonys has sent out an early warning it will again be in the mix with a comprehensive defeat of Ashfield in the opening round of the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s B-grade competition.
Last season’s runner-up side made 7-168 off its overs. Geoff Edwards was the best of the bowlers for Ashfield taking three wickets. In reply, Ashfield was bowled out for 93.
Former skipper Jason King was the only batsmen to offer resistance, making 39.
Wallan won a thriller against East Sunbury at Greenhill Reserve. The Thunder was sent in and made 9-139 off its 40 votes. Matthew Jackson top scored with 25, with most players getting starts but not going on with it.
In reply, Wallan passed the score with one wicket in hand, finishing on 9-142. Jake Calleja took three wickets for the Thunder.
In positive news for the Thunder, captain-coach Jessy Carroll returned to the field after health issues.
Lancefield chased down Bacchus Marsh’s total of 9-118 with ease. The Tigers shared the bowling around, with Matthew Bowden and Glenn Caton taking three wickets each.
The Tigers reached the target with wickets down and nearly 10 overs to spare, making 5-121.
Sunbury United had a tough initiation to the B-grade competition. After being relegated from the McIntyre Cup after last season, United faced Macedon first up.
United could only make 130 after winning the toss, with Brett McDorman top scoring with 41. Brendon Scott took five wickets for Macedon.
Macedon made the chase look easy, cruising to 0-131.
