Here’s a quick look at some of the other sport from around Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges this week.
Cricket
Sunbury United has appointed Steve Grey as coach for the 2016-17 Gisborne and District Cricket Association season. Grey previously played for United in the early 2000s and was instrumental in helping the club win back its spot in the top comp after being relegated to B-grade. He won the competition’s Kevin Sullivan Medal for best player in 2007-08 when playing with United. More recently, Grey coached East Sunbury’s senior cricket side before making the move two seasons ago to coach their football side. He still holds that role. United finished bottom of the McIntyre Cup ladder last season.
Soccer
Sunbury United drew 1-1 with Sporting Whittlesea on Saturday in FFV state league 2 north-west. Despite the draw, United remains 11th on the ladder. In state league 5 west, Kyneton District and Gisborne both suffered big losses. The Rangers lost 5-0 to Golden Plains. Gisborne lost 3-1 to Keilor Wolves.
Football
East Sunbury’s victory over win-less Burnside Heights in Essendon District Football League division 2 made it two in a row. The Thunder restricted the Bears to just one goal in each of the last three quarters, winning 17.13 (115)-6.4 (40). Tom Galea was the star in front of goal for the Thunder kicking eight goals. The Thunder sit sixth on the ladder, with three wins for the season. This week they face seventh placed Jacana.
Golf
Les Gaunt dominated in tough conditions at the Romsey Golf Club’s monthly medal event on Saturday. In dark conditions and with a gusting south-westerly wind. the players also had to deal with rain. The conditions meant is was tough to post a good score, with a run of two consecutive pars seen as excellent golf. Gaunt was the only player to post a decent score in the conditions shooting 77-5-72 in the strokes and putts competition. On Wednesday Elaine Scanlon won the women’s monthly medal.
