Shannon now a Mav

Western Warriors and new Sunbury Lions recruit Ruby Shannon has been named a training partner for the Melbourne Mavericks for the Suncorp Super Netball season.

Shannon, who was a training partner with the Melbourne Vixens last season, was named the Mavericks’ third training partner for this year.

She had already been named as part of the Melbourne Mavericks reserves squad for the upcoming season.

“A dynamic midcourter renowned for her speed and versatility, Shannon has progressed through the Netball Victoria pathway, representing the Victorian State Team and starring for the Western Warriors in the Victorian Netball League (VNL),” the Mavericks said in the announcement.

“Her impressive resume also includes being part of the Australian under-21 squad that claimed gold at the Netball World Youth Cup in Gibraltar earlier this year.

“The 21-year-old was a Melbourne Vixens Training Partner in 2025, where she also played a key role in their Reserves team; Vixens Academy.

“Recently named in the Mavericks reserves squad for the 2026 Super Netball Reserves competition, Shannon will once again step up as a training partner, this time with the main Mavs squad, gaining invaluable exposure to the elite environment and continuing her development at the highest level.”

New Mavericks coach Gerard Murphy, who has coached Shannon at the Vixens Academy and against her in the VNL said her elevation reflects her talent and work ethic.

“Ruby brings exceptional speed and creativity to the midcourt. Her ability to apply relentless pressure and deliver quality ball to her shooters makes her a fantastic fit for our program,” he said.

“We’re excited to see her thrive in this next stage of her career.”

The Mavs will announce a fourth training partner in the new year.

Defenders Charlotte Sexton and Charli Hoey are the other two training partners who have been named.

It’s been a big off season for Shannon who has signed with the Sunbury Lions in the Ballarat Netball League.

Lions coach Kim Bailey, who also coaches Shannon at the Western Warriors, said she would add a lot to the squad.

She will join several of her Western Warriors teammates at the Lions.

“She will be in the Mavericks reserves team and will play SN reserves with the Mavs so we won’t have her straight away,” Bailey said of Shannon.

“We get more in depth with her. Georgia [Hellyer] showed in the grand final that she could hold down wing attack.

“We might put Tayla [Honey] back in defence and Ruby could play in centre.”
