Runs galore but Sunbury United falls short

A 300-plus score wasn’t enough for Sunbury United as it suffered a big loss to Diggers Rest Bulla in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup.

United put in a good day with the bat chasing down a huge 451 against the Burras.

United needed a couple of big scores to push them towards that total and their batsmen answered the call.

Opener Dilan Chandima made 114 at the top of the order, but it wasn’t enough, with his side bowled out for 306 with five overs remaining.

Woodend and St Anthony’s both avoided outright losses. Having conceded first innings points on day one, both sides knew they needed to have good days with the bat.

Woodend started the day 17 runs behind Bacchus Marsh which declared at its overnight total of 3-99.

After being bowled out for 82 in its first innings, Woodend had a much better day as they made 290.

Warren Else top scored with 70. Gisborne resumed at 1-172 and didn’t hang around with the bat against St Anthonys.

The Dragons batted until Tom Sanders got his century, declaring at 2-201.

Sanders finished 102 not out. St Anthony’s, which was two players down, fought hard and was bowled out for 162.

Romsey came away with an easy win against Riddell. Romsey resumed at 1-46 in reply to Riddell’s 148.

The Redbacks chased down the runs easily and declared at 6-152. Riddell, in its second innings, finished 6-125 to avoid an outright defeat.

Michael Day at the top of the order was the mainstay for the Bombers, finishing 77 not out.

Gisborne remains undefeated on top of the ladder having made the most of being the only team to get a win in two of the rounds.

Diggers Rest Bulla is pressuring them, while Bacchus Marsh and Sunbury United round out the top four
