Romsey makes a point

Romsey held off Riddell in a high-paced match in the Riddell District Netball League.

Both sides had their time dominating the play, but neither could put the other away and it went down to the wire.

After hitting the front in the third quarter, the Redbacks held on to win 48-47.

Redbacks coach Luke Marko Rawlings was relieved his side held on following a close loss and draw earlier in the season.

“I’m so happy that it didn’t go to a draw again,” he said. “I don’t know what I would have done.

“We sort of let them back into it in the last quarter, which got to me a bit … but we played well as a team.”

The Redbacks took control of the game in the third quarter and got the margin out to five
goals on more than one occasion in the second half.

Marko Rawlings said the key to the turnaround was adjusting the pace of the game.

“I think we got used to them delaying the play a little bit and we sort of set up better, which we executed better down the court,” he said.

Chelsea Ross shot 36 goals from 40 for the Redbacks but Bec Colwell shot the exact same figures for the Bombers.

Stefanie Symes and Monique Clark were both strong in defence for the Redbacks.

“Mon and Symes were unreal and they limited her [Colwell] impact in that second half,” Marko Rawlings said.

The win moves the Redbacks to fourth on the ladder but they have played one less game than the top three sides.

“To beat a side like that when everyone probably thought we were underdogs, it puts us in a really good position for the rest of the season,” Marko Rawlings said.

“I think we’ve got a pretty young squad and obviously we don’t have the juniors coming up, so we’ve picked up a few players throughout.

“Everyone is coming together well.”

The Redbacks face another challenge this week, taking on the undefeated Macedon side.

The Cats are coming off smashing Broadford, 69-26.

Both sides will likely have players missing or on restrictions due to the Victorian Netball League round on Sunday.

Marko Rawlings said it would be a good test of depth.

“We’ve only really got nine players on our team, but the depth we’ve got means everyone can pretty much play anywhere.”

In other results, Wallan held on against Melton Centrals 40-37, Diggers Rest beat Woodend-Hesket 59-34 and Rupertswood beat Rockbank 41-32.
