Bombers reign over Burras in the rain

Riddell remained undefeated as the weather played havoc with other games in the Riddell District Netball League.

The A-grade and B-grade sides of Macedon and Woodend-Hesket didn’t even get on the court because of the inclement weather and the Sunbury Kangaroos and Rupertswood match was called off a minute into the third quarter, with the Sharks leading 37-0 and playing as if they were on a dry court.

But at Riddells Creek, the Bombers were dominant against Diggers Rest as rain made play difficult for much of the first half.

Despite missing several players from its starting line-up, the Bombers won 65-29.

Both sides took a while to settle in the wet conditions. The Bombers found their feet first and got out to a comfortable 18-7 lead by quarter-time.

Shooter Mikaela Vaughan was outstanding under the ring making the most of the good work by the midcourters and defenders further down the court.

The Burras weren’t able to get back into the game after the first break and the Bombers continued on their merry way as the rain cleared up in the second half.

Vaughan shot 47 goals, while youngster Madison Caulfield filled the void of the missing Christine Harris with 18.

For the Burras, Michelle Dowal shot 17 goals and Amy Carroll chipped in with 12.

In other matches, Wallan defeated Kilmore 44-24, with Kate Bishop netting 33 goals and Denise Goodwin 11.

Elsewhere, Melton Centrals was too strong for Rockbank on Sunday, winning 27-15.
