Riddell to keep playing the kids

Riddell will continue to blood the kids in the Riddell District Football League.

Having had nearly 20 players make their senior debut last season, the Bombers will continue on that trend this year as they look to build from within.

Bombers coach Jamie Elliott said he had no hesitation in continuing to back in the younger guys.

“Things have been good at the moment,” he said.

“The playing list is similar to last season and we’ll keep playing the kids.

“We played 18 or 19 players last season who hadn’t played before and we’ve added some more experience around them and they can hopefully take the next step.”

Elliott said the likes of Michael Sahlberg and Lachlan Hensen had both stood out during the off season and had been training as well as everyone.

The Bombers have been quite on the recruiting front,  with most of the ins familiar faces around Riddells Creek.

Paul Sahlberg, the 2015 Bowen Medalist, and premiership player Peter Robertson have returned and will add to the midfield.

James Nolan, who played just six games last season, is back full time, while Brayden and Jason Allen are expected to return to the field after not playing last year.

The other in for the Bombers is Dylan Tarczon

Tarczon, who missed last season with injury, has played both VFL and TAC Cup football.

Elliott said he was training well and been fantastic.

The Bombers will have just one practice match in the lead up to the season, with the focus on having everyone fit for round one.

Elliott said they were looking at adding a bit more flexiblity.

He pointed to someone like Nolan, a known forward, as someone who might spend a bit of time in the ruck, as they switch things around.

The Bombers were knocked out by Rupertswood in the semi final after a grand final appearance the year before.

Elliott said they would again enter the season with no expectations.

“We were in the grand final in 2016 and not far off it in the game against Rupertswood last year.

“If we defended better earlier against Rupo it may have been a different story.

“We’re still learning and learning to train better.”

Elliott said they would have an idea of where they sit after the first three rounds.

The Bombers had a tough start to the season last year and started 1-4 and it gets even harder this year.

“We play the reigning premiers in Macedon, then Wallan and Diggers Rest,” he said.

“We’ll know if we’re around the mark. Hopefully we’ll improve on last year.”
