Redbacks, Burras big wins

Romsey sent a statement, while Diggers Rest Bulla moved up a spot in the run home to the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup finals.

With the top sides playing each other, the sides were given a mini finals preview on the second last round.

While Gisborne remained undefeated as it accounted for Bacchus Marsh, Romsey upset second placed Sunbury United.

The Redbacks had made 180 on day one of the match, which didn’t seem like enough on paper.

Having already lost a wicket on day one, United was going along nicely at 4-147.

The wickets started to fall and they kept falling with United bowled out for 175

Upul Fernando top scored with 54

For the Redbacks, Jamie Taylor was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets.

Despite the win, the Redbacks slipped a spot on the ladder behind Diggers Rest Bulla which had a big win against Rupertswood.

The Burras had made 286 on day one of the match.

Rupo struggled and was bowled out for 105. Andrew Pizaro top scored with 34 not out.

Gayan Welikalage took 6-30 off his 20 overs.

The Burras decided to have another bat instead of going for an outright win.

The Burras made 2-204 from 24.3 overs.

Indika Massalage (113) and Mulkapuge Lakshan (86) put on 180 for the opening partnership.

Gisborne snuck home against Bacchus Marsh in the other battle between top four sides.

The Bulls had made 9-218 on day one of the match.

After losing two early wickets, the Dragons steadied and were cruising at 2-131. The wickets started to fall with the Dragons soon 6-188.

While there were a few nervy moments, the Dragons got the runs with wicket in hand. They were eventually bowled out for 226.

Jarryd Vernon continued his good form making 118.

Thomas Wardell took 7-34 for the Bulls.

At the other end of the ladder, the bottom four sides faced each other.

Woodend got home in a thriller against the Sunbury Kangaroos.

Woodend had made 208 on day one.

The Kangaroos openers got them off to a good start before they lost three quick wickets to slip to 3-87.

The Kangaroos were continuing to make runs at a decent click, but the wickets continued to fall.

The last partnership between Joshua Sorraghan and Matthew Parker fought hard, but come up for six runs short.

The Kangaroos were bowled out for 208.

Jordan Ballinger top scored with 58, while Parker scored 35 coming in at number 11.

Tom Robson took four wickets for Woodend.

Woodend finished 6-184 in its second innings. Greg Matthews made 83, while Sorraghan took 5-10 off three overs.

Woodend now sits in seventh spot and kept its small finals hopes alive.

Wallan did its hopes of staying up no harm, beating East Sunbury.

The Thunder, which now sits bottom, was bowled out for 144 in reply to 254.
