Ranges stars in state team

Three Macedon Ranges rising stars have been named in the Basketball Victoria under-18 country team for the national championships.

Cooper Duff-Tytler, Sonny Maxwell and Sam Haslett have been named in the final team, with another Macedon Ranges local Alex Gray named as an emergency.

Duff-Tytler, who plays for the Keilor Thunder, continues to impress making the state team for a third straight year.

It’ll be the second time he’s played in the under-18 age group.

Last year he was part of Australia’s under-16 national team that played in the FIBA Asia Cup.

Duff-Tytler is also a budding footballer having been part of the Vic Country under-16 team at the national championships last year.

Maxwell has made the team a Vic Country team for a second straight year.

Last year he was part of the under-16 team, having been an emergency 12 months earlier.

Maxwell started playing basketball at Sunbury in the under-12s following in his father’s footsteps, who played representative basketball growing up.

Haslett was also part of last year’s Vic Country under-16 national team that will compete in Perth in July.

Haslett started playing basketball at under-12s at the Gisborne Bulldogs before joining the Sunbury Jets.

Last year he had the privilege of being selected for the National Performance Pathway on a scholarship.

Gray was also part of the under-16 Vic Country team with Haslett and Maxwell.

Gray’s basketball journey started in Woodend.

He’s been playing Victorian Junior Basketball League] for Sunbury Jets since under-12s and has also been fortunate enough to be selected to represent Macedon Ranges Basketball Association at multiple country championships, including taking home the title on a couple of occasions.

Last year the country team fell short in the decider to Vic Metro. Duff-Tytler scored eight points in the final.

The championships will be held in Brisbane between April 7-14.
