Plenty of bowls despite the rain

The top three in the Bowls Victoria Ballarat Highlands Bowls Region Highlands division 1 competition further cemented their spots despite horrible conditions on Saturday.

While rain saw much of the sport across Melbourne and the wider region called off, four of the five division 1 games were able to go ahead as the rain held off long enough for some action.

Kyneton slightly increased its lead at the top of the table with a convincing win against Romsey.

The reigning premiers were able to claim all the points in an 82 (16)-36 (9) win.

Terry Kelly’s rink was the standard on the day with a 34-7 win against Cameron Austin.

David James Thomas’ rink had an 18-17 win, while Anthony Mathison’s rink had a 30-12 win.

Kyneton now sits four points clear of Kyneton Golf at the top, while Romsey sits in sixth spot.

Golf only just got over the line against Diggers Rest.

The match went down to the wire with Golf getting over the line 53 (14)-52 (2).

Anthony Barker (20-15) and Peter Linehan (16-15) were the winning skips for Golf, while Kyle Stafford was the winning skip for Diggers Rest (22-17).

The top two teams, who sit undefeated, have a break on the rest of the pack.

Kilmore leads the chasing pack as it sits in third spot.

It had a good win against bottom side Lancefield, winning 83 (16)-48 (0).

Lance Whitnall (29-17) and Daniel Noonan (34-13) were the big winners for Kilmore.

Broadford was the other winner on a wet and miserable day.

It was a strong performance from Broadford as it defeated Woodend, 70 (14)-50 (2).

Two of the three rinks were decided by one shot, with Daryl Kelly’s 35-15 win against Stephen Pickles the difference in the end to help Broadford get the job done.

Broadford is among the chasing pack of teams.

The only game not to go ahead in division 1 was Trentham and Gisborne’s with the two teams sharing the points after their match was washed out.

Gisborne sits in fourth spot with just 14 separating it down to Woodend in eighth spot.

In division 2, three of the four games were also able to get results.

Kyneton 2 was able to beat Macedon, 62 (14)-50 (2), Michael Plowman’s rink had a 24-13 win, while Denise Knight’s rink won 23-19.

Kyneton Golf 2 defeated Romsey 2 (58 (14)-51 (2) with Rick Seymour and John Trounce’s rinks getting the wins for Golf.

Like in the top grade, the two Kyneton teams sit atop the table with Golf 10 points clear of Kyneton.

Gisborne 2 was the other winner as it beat Broadford 2, 68 (13)-56 (3).

Diggers Rest 2 and Kilmore 2’s game was washed out.

Meanwhile in division 3, just one game was able to be completed due to the rain.

Kyneton 3 was able to claim a massive 67 (16)-34 (0) win against Trentham 2.

Kyneton sits atop the table.
