Molly Hemburrow has footy fever. The 16-year-old Sunbury resident, who works with the Western Bulldogs, is keen on a football career. She speaks with Serena Seyfort.
What is your connection to Sunbury?
I was born in Sunbury Private Hospital and I’ve lived in Sunbury all of my life. I’ve always loved Sunbury, especially the small community and how it means that you know most people. When you’re walking down the street, you’re guaranteed to see someone you know.
What do you love most about the area?
The thing I like most about the area is the sporting culture and facilities. I love the fact that I get to play against and alongside my friends and then see them again at school.
What would you change about the area?
I would love if Sunbury was the way it used to be when it wasn’t as big and busy. Other than that, I’m happy with the way it is.
Tell us about your love of sport.
I have always had a passion for sport. No matter what sport I’m playing or watching, I love it.
I started playing basketball for Sunbury Braves when I was in prep and then footy in year 7, playing for Sunbury Lions girls.
After moving to SEDA College (sports educational development school), I now have new opportunities to work within the football industry and with the Western Bulldogs Football Club, running clinics for primary-school kids, promoting the game and the club and teaching basic footy skills. It’s great!
I love it because it gives me an insight into a possible future career, either as an AFLW player or somewhere in the football community.
What would people be surprised to know about you?
People still get surprised when I say that I play footy because I’m a girl and that’s not so common – yet.
