Sunbury Jets’ couldn’t have asked for a more perfect start to their Big V youth league women’s division 2 grand final series.
Entering the best-of-three series against Blackburn Vikings as favourites, the Jets quickly showed in game one that they meant business.
An 18-5 point first quarter in favour of the Jets set the tone early and when the lead was extended to 24 points at half time the game was all but over.
The lead got to as much as 34 points in the last quarter, before both sides started to rest their starters and give their benches a good run. Despite losing the last quarter, the Jets ran out easy winners, 67-40.
Jets’ coach Andrew Seidel said everything went to plan on the night.
“I was a bit nervous about it during the week,” he said.
“We started with a focus on shutting them down defensively as they’re a pretty good side.
“We were able to do that in the first quarter and we really started on song.”
Every player hit the scoreboard for the Jets, with Seidel saying being able to give every player court time was a real positive out of the game.
“The last six minutes of the game I had most of the bench players on the court.
“It was good experience for them all.”
Chloe Jackson top scored with 15 points, while Chloe Angove scored 13 points
The Jets now return home for game two on Saturday night, and if needed game three on Sunday.
Seidel said he hoped the team had learnt from it’s semi final series when they had a big win in game one, before dropping game two.
“The team is in a really good space,” he said.
“We’ll make sure we have a similar preparation and routine ahead of the game.”
Meanwhile, Chloe Angove is up for four awards at the Big V awards night next month.
Angove has been nominated for the youth league women’s division 2 rising star award, defensive player of the year, most valuable player and all-star 5 team of the year.
Seidel said Angove, who was named in last year’s all-star 5 team, deserved all the accolades she was receiving.
Seidel has been nominated for coach of the year.
“It’s not about me,” he said about the nomination.
” It’s about the girls playing their roles and it makes my role a lot easier.”
