SPORTS SHORTS

Here’s a quick look at some of the other sports news from across Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges from the past week.

Netball

Three Riddell District Netball League players will play for the ACU Sovereigns in division 1 of the Victorian Netball League next year. Rupertswood’s Sidonie Moore and Riddell’s Danni Davidson return after playing for the Sovereigns in 2015, while the Sharks’ Tess Abbott joins the side for the first time. The Sharks’ Keara Fitzgerald and Eloise Freeman are part of the Sovereigns’ under-19 team and development squad respectively. Riddell premiership player Mikaela Vaughan headlines RDNL players at the Melbourne University Lightning. Vaughan is part of the championship side, while the Sharks’ Maddison Gay has been named in Lightning’s division 1 team. Sharks teammate Hayley Mathews and Lancefield’s Taylah Watson have been included among the under-19s. Riddell’s Meikah Johns is part of the Lightning’s development squad.

Golf

Anthony Freeman is Romsey Golf Club’s John Laing Shield champion for 2015, overcoming a slow start to beat Les Gaunt in the final on Saturday. Gaunt was three up after eight holes, but Freeman won the next three to square the match. He then won the 14th and 17th to seal a 2 and 1 win.

Bowls

Gisborne continued its winning start to the Central Highlands bowls division season with a hard-fought win over Kyneton. In its closest match so far, Gisborne won 89 (12) – 83 (6). In other results, Lancefield had a massive win over Woodend, 137 (16) – 70 (2), Romsey scraped home against Bacchus Marsh 82 (15) – 81 (3), and Kyneton Golf Gold beat clubmates Kyneton Golf Blue 128 (18) – 65 (0).

RDFNL

Riddell District Football Netball League will split the opening round of next season over two weeks. The extended round one fixture has been designed to allow supporters the opportunity to watch every senior football and A-grade netball match to begin the season, with Friday and Saturday night games along with Saturday and Sunday time slots. Melton Centrals will kick off against Rockbank; Woodend-Hesket plays Lancefield; Rupertswood takes on Wallan; Diggers Rest hosts Riddell; Romsey faces the Sunbury Kangaroos; and Broadford and Macedon will close out the round.
