Kyneton is hoping to build on its most successful women’s football league season, with even further development this year.
The Tigers, who will enter their third season with a senior team, finished fifth in the MBCM Northern Country Women’s League last season.
Senior women’s football director Natalie Korinfsky said they would also field a youth girls team this year.
“We’re looking good for numbers for both teams, but we would like a few extra numbers,” she said. “We’re looking for both experienced players and beginners.”
This year, the Tigers women’s side will play in a new AFL Central Victoria Senior Women’s Football League – their third competition in as many years.
Korinfsky said they hoped the move to a more localised league would attract more players because there would be less travel time.
Some matches last season, the Tigers had to travel more than two hours to get to games.
Their opponents this year are set to include Bendigo Thunder, Kangaroo Flat, North Bendigo and Strathfieldsaye. Korinfsky said with the move to a more local league, it would allow the women’s side to more closely align with the men’s side which plays in the Bendigo Football League.
Korinfsky, who was co-captain of the women’s team last season, said they would look to have a few development days in the lead-up to the season. The club is also looking for a senior women’s coach. Ben Muir, who coached the side last year, has stood down.
