Massive weekend for Sunbury Lions

The Sunbury Lions are preparing for one of their biggest days on and off the field of the Ballarat Football League season.

For the senior side, it’s virtually a do or die match against Bacchus Marsh, with a loss meaning the Lions will likely miss out on the finals for the first time since moving to the league in 1997.

While a loss wouldn’t be the end of the Lions’ finals hopes completely, it would make it very hard.

Both the Lions and Cobras enter the match on the back of a bye. Before that, both sides form has been patchy and they have dropped crucial matches.

Off field, the Lions are holding a reunion for all their premierships teams from the ‘8s’. Those teams the club will be celebrating are the 1958 reserves (then under-19s), 1968 reserves, 1988 senior and reserves,  and the 1998 senior and reserves teams.

No Lions netball team has won a a premiership in the 8s. They are hoping to change that this year, with all five teams in finals positions.

Lions’ secretary Allan O’Connor said it was a big day for the club and were hoping to get as many past players, supporters and volunteers back to the club to catch up and relieve memories.

He said this year would be one of the bigger premiership reunions that would be held. Anyone who has been involved with the club are welcome  to attend.

The reunion starts at 12pm.

The football and netball action starts at 10am, with the club under-18s football concluding action playing after the seniors.
