MacLaren inspiring Sunbury United

Sunbury United is hoping the feats of former junior player Jamie MacLaren can help inspire the next generation of players at the club.

MacLaren, who grew up playing at United, is now one of Australia’s rising stars and kicking goals on a national level.

He’s twice been named the Hyundai A-League NAB Young Footballer of the Year and last season scored 19 goals for Brisbane Roar, the equal most of the competition. He has also represented the Australian senior national team on four occasions.

As part of his prize for winning young footballer of the year, MacLaren who is now playing with Darmstadt 98, selected United to receive $1000 as part of his prize from NAB.

Last week, members from NAB and FFV executive manager George Angelopoulos, visited United to present them with the cheque.

United president Charlie Pongrac said the club was extremely grateful for MacLaren for selecting them.

“Jamie’s career progression all the way to the national Australian football team really shows what’s possible from the grassroots level,” he said.

“Jamie used to practice for hours on end at his home, day after day, and it’s a testament to his hard work and commitment that he has already been able to achieve so much in the sport – and it’s a really positive message for our kids at Sunbury United FC that the hard work pays off!”

“We are also very thankful towards NAB for this Club Recognition Award – the equipment and funds will go towards further improving our facilities which all of our junior players will benefit from.”

NAB’s Tim Garepo said NAB was proud to play an important role in rewarding the stars of tomorrow.

As well as receiving $1000, United also received equipment including balls, training bibs, cones, kit bags, coaches boards and pop-up goals.
