Macedon keen for women’s football side

Macedon is keen to field a side in the inaugural Riddell District Football League women’s competition this season.

The Cats posted on social media that the club was keen to get the numbers for a side to provide a pathway for their girls teams.

Tamara Collins, who coached the Cats’ youth and junior girls sides last season, said it was exciting to be looking at having a women’s side.

“This is really exciting and just good for female footy,” she said.

“The last two years have been really great with the younger girls and now it’s about having somewhere for them to go.

“And us older ones, who have never played before, somewhere to play.”

The Cats’ youth girls side made the grand final last year, while their junior girls team had a good first season.

Collins said there had been great numbers for both sides and the next step is to try and get the women’s side up.

She admits that it will be a challenge getting a team up in a small town. She said currently numbers were low.

“We’re looking for those girls who have aged out of juniors,” she said. “And we’re looking for those who are 20 and older, who are keen to give it a go.

“You don’t need any experience. Come for the enjoyment and have some fun.”

The Cats are still looking for a coach. They were set to meet with the league last week to have further discussions about how everything will work.

Collins said the league had been really supportive around female football and were keen to get the competition up and running.

She said to be part of the league’s first women’s competition would be pretty exciting.

Melton, Kyneton and Mt Alexander has all transferred their teams to the new competition, while Romsey and Woodend-Hesket are planning to field sides.

Lancefield has also expressed some interest in getting a team up and running, showing the interest in the area.

“Lots of people have done a lot of work before us to get us to this spot,” Collins said.

“It’s in a good spot that women and girls now have opportunities, which is great. We have the support from both the junior and senior clubs and we’re looking forward to working with the other clubs.

Collins will continue to coach the Cats’ youth girls side this season.
