Living legends help to draw new blood to over 60s cricket

Living legends of the two-legged kind will be among special guests at the launch of Sunbury and District Over 60s Cricket Club’s new season.

Club secretary Bill Morrison said seniors cricket had become increasingly popular over the past 10 years and he’s hoping a barbecue at Living Legends in Woodlands Historic Park on August 21 will attract more members.

Mr Morrison said there was a nationwide circuit for cricket players aged 60 or more, and “some pretty good players can still be seen … on some lovely grounds.”

He said some of Australia’s best former cricketers continue to take thousands of wickets, and score tens of thousands of runs in over 50s, 60s and 70s leagues across the country.

“They may not dive or bowl quickly, but they do not make unforced errors,” he said.

“Former Australian captain Graeme Yallop bats regularly for the Casey over-60s.”

Mr Morrison said launching the new season at Living Legends, the retirement home of some of Australia’s famous thoroughbreds, was fitting.

“It will be a great opportunity to not only mingle with the local cricket legends, but those legends of the turf and past Melbourne Cup winners.

“Over age or seniors cricket has been around in England for many years, and is now finally catching on here in Australia.

“You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.”

The cricket season will be launched next month. Details: www.livinglegends.org.au or 0458 408 000
