Leaky defence a problem for Sunbury United

Sunbury United’s up-and-down start to the FFV state league 3 north-west season has continued with a 3-0 loss to Whittlesea United.

After opening its account in round two with a good 5-2 win against Upfield, Sunbury found itself a goal behind at half-time after Whittlesea scored 20 minutes in.

Sunbury was down to 10 men after goalkeeper Akim Abdul received a red card.

Whittlesea doubled the score from a corner in the 70th minute making a Sunbury comeback difficult.

The final nail in the coffin came in injury time, with Whittlesea scoring a third and final goal.

The loss leaves Sunbury with a win and two losses after three games.

One area in which the team will look to improve is its defence – the side has conceded 12 goals this season, the second most goals in the division.

Only bottom side Melbourne City has conceded more goals.

Sunbury’s next match will be against Brimbank Stallions on April 22.

In state league 5 west, Gisborne and Kyneton District remain winless after the first three rounds.

On Saturday, Gisborne, which had a 2-2 draw against Keilor Wolves in the previous round, lost 4-0 to Laverton Park.

Laverton Park set the game up in the first half with three goals.

Kyneton District had a much closer match, losing 1-0 to Melbourne Lions. Despite the loss, it was the Rangers’ best performance of the season.

Gisborne and Kyneton District both have the coming weekend off because of the Easter bye.

In the next round, the Rangers will face Maidstone United, another winless side, and Gisborne will play Spring Hills under lights.
