Launceston Cup joy for locals

Two local residents are celebrating taking home the Tasmania’s biggest race, the Launceston Cup.

Sunbury’s Adam Mizzi and Laurence Eales are among the owners of Bondeiger, which broke the track record on the way to winning the $250,000 group three race last week.

Mizzi said the six-year-old entered the race about third or fourth favourite in a strong field that included international horses.

“We’re very lucky that he had a great race and we had a great jockey on him,” he said.

“He came from fourth back and had to make up a bit of ground. We were ecstatic about it.

“We later found out he broke the track record.”

It’s a third straight win for Bondeiger and the biggest of his career.

The horse comes from the Eales Racing Syndication, which is also based in Sunbury.

Mizzi said they would sit down with trainer Darren Weir to decide where the horse would race next, but said they could consider the Adelaide and Sydney Cups.
