Late crash sinks Dragons’ T20 hopes

Star Gisborne batsmen Sarah Gunn predicted a close match in Cricket Victoria’s Women’s Community Cricket Shield T20 final on Sunday – and she was dead right.

Unfortunately, the result didn’t go the Dragons’ way and they went down by 16 runs, their second straight grand final loss.

Needing 105 to claim the title against Brunswick, the Dragons looked set to launch a real tilt at the target when they needed 29 in five overs with five wickets in hand.

But quick wickets and tight Brunswick bowling undid the Dragons, who lost 3-9 off the next four overs.

Twenty runs off the last over proved too much and the Dragons finished on 8-88.

Before the match, Gunn said the side seemed to be better at T20 than at the 40-over game.

“We’ve been pretty consistent in the T20s and it would be good to win the premiership,” she said.

“We were on top of the ladder at Christmas and needed to win only one game after the break to make the final.

“The T20 competition is always fun.”

Gunn said that despite occasionally not being able to field a full side, there had been plenty of development from the team.

Gunn herself is second on the number of runs scored so far for the season.

“Everyone has been pretty consistent all year,” she said.

“Kate Darby has batted and bowled really well all year. She made her maiden 50 this season and made another one last week.

“Erin Kennedy has been getting runs, while Anne Walton is another who has been playing well.

“It’s been a team effort all year.”
