The scoreboard counts for little for Lancefield this Riddell District Football League season.
The Tigers decided in the off season to strip everything back and start from scratch, which meant that on field things could get ugly.
The Tigers have won just one match so far, but coach Chris Collins said they were heading in the right direction.
“The losses on the scoreboard have been brutal,” he said.
“We’ve got a different perspective from inside the club. We’re realistic and know that we won’t challenge a lot of sides.
“We’ve got our own things we’ve been focusing on.”
Collins said so far they had been happy with the direction the club was now heading in.
He said getting the ‘local feel’ back to the club was important and they had managed to do that with a good mix of players with the average age in their early 20s.
“We wanted to restore the culture to where it should be,” Collins said.
“We stripped it back to the bare bones and started again. No one is getting paid.
“Now it’s about moving forward and building, and hopefully build a strong club for the future.”
Collins said limited player numbers and injuries had affected their on-field performance.
On Saturday, the Tigers had a tough day against Melton Centrals.
Centrals, led by Dylan Weir with 19 goals, won easily, 29.17 (191)-3.8 (26). Joel Badger kicked two goals, while Brad Wight was the Tigers’ best.
Collins said he was happy with half of the game. “You’re never happy to get done by that score,” he said.
“We have different targets and we were happy with that for the first half of the game.
“The second half was pretty disappointing and we had a good chat after the game.
“We’ll mix things up at training and keep the season alive in terms of it being enjoyable and fun, which the season has been so far.”
In other results, Wallan remains the only undefeated team after beating Rupertswood, 8.12 (60)-7.11 (53). Woodend-Hesket cemented its spot in the top four, with a 24.21 (165)-2.4 (16) win, Riddell smashed Sunbury Kangaroos 18.16 (124)-2.5 (17), Macedon defeated Romsey 13.14 (92)-5.7 (37) and Diggers Rest beat Rockbank, 30.29 (209)-2.2 (14).
All teams have this weekend off for the Queen’s Birthday weekend.
