Lancefield’s grip on a top two spot in Central Highlands Bowls Division’s division 1 is under threat.
A top two finish looked set just two rounds ago, with Gisborne having already secured top spot and Lancefield well ahead of the chasing pack.
But two straight losses, including an upset loss to Romsey, has powerhouse Kyneton Golf still in the mix for the top two.
On Saturday, Golf needed a win – a big one – against Lancefield to keep its hopes of a second placed finish alive.
It did just that with a 100 (16)-81 (2) victory.
Kyneton Golf’s Anthony Mathison, Mark Andrews and Stephen Taylor won their rinks, while MichaEl Linehan was the winning skipper for Lancefield.
Lancefield secretary Leanne Dickenson said before the loss to Kyneton Golf it was a danger game, but the aim was still very much on a top two finish and a good chance of making it through to the grand final.
“First or second was our aim for the season,” she said.
“It’ll give us a good chance to win or at least make the grand final. We rate ourselves a good chance come finals.”
A win for Lancefield against bottom side Woodend this Saturday will seal a top two spot.
Dickenson said the club hadn’t settled on its best line-up just yet, but was hoping to have it sorted out this week.
Lancefield’s second team is set for finals in division 3.
Dickenson said it had been a good effort by the second side, which had to deal with changes each week to fill spots in the top side.
In other division 1 news, the fight for fourth will come down to the final round.
Only four points separate Kyneton and Bacchus Marsh after both sides had big wins, against Romsey and Woodend respectively.
Ladder leader Gisborne again claimed the full 18 points, this time defeating Trentham 130 (18)-70 (0).
In division 2, Bacchus Marsh, Diggers Rest, Gisborne Yellow and Macedon had wins, while Macedon, Trentham, Woodend, Romsey and Kyneton took the points in division 3.
Meanwhile, Sunbury’s winning streak in Bowls Victoria Pennant division 1, section 1 came to an end.
Facing its biggest test of the season, Sunbury had to travel to play runaway ladder leader Fitzroy Victoria.
Sunbury had a day to forget, losing 99 (18)-65 (0).
Mark Cowan suffered his first defeat in seven rounds, losing 25-9, Carla Krizanic’s rink lost 22-19 and Brad Willoughby’s rink lost 24-20.
Paul Long, skippering for the first time, lost 28-17.
Sunbury is fourth on the ladder, 10 points clear of fifth-placed Glenroy.
This week, Sunbury will take on Essendon (2) without Krizanic, Willoughby and Elise Cowan.
Brad Janner will return to the side after missing Saturday’s loss.
