Golden debut for Sunbury Kangaroos

The Sunbury Kangaroos have produced a winning start in its AFL Goldfields women’s competition campaign.

One of several new women’s teams across the state this season, the Kangaroos were busy in the off-season, with more than 20 players coming on board.

Having played a couple of practice matches, the Kangaroos finally got to take to the field for a proper game, playing Bacchus Marsh in a grading match on Sunday,

The AFL Goldfields competition will have two grading rounds before the teams are split into two divisions.

Despite the Cobras having more experience, having previously fielded women’s sides, the Kangaroos won 7.6 (48)-4.3 (27) after an even contest early on.

The experienced Tara Crisp kicked three goals for the Kangaroos, while Georgia Marinier chipped in with two goals.

Demi Hallett and Bronte Koutras were the other goal scorers.

The Kangaroos are still looking for more players for anyone in interested in playing.

Gisborne also fielded a women’s team for the first time, having previously had junior sides under Gisborne Rookies.

The Bulldogs took on Melton Centrals, who finished runners-up in the Victorian Women’s Football League west competition.

The Bulldogs did well early on in a low-scoring first half before Centrals kicked late goals in the final quarter.

Centrals experience proved too much for the Bulldogs, winning 6.9 (45)-0.2 (2).

The draw for the second round of grading is still to be released.
