Gisborne and District region’s Renegades Cricket League is hoping to give more young girls the chance to realise their cricket amibitions.
The competition, in its second year, is aimed at getting girls between the ages of 10-14 into the game.
This year, the girls will be put into teams to play weekly matches and take part in skills sessions.
Former state junior cricketer and current Premier cricketer Tegan Orwin will help run the program. Orwin represented the Central Highlands at a junior level.
Current Central Highlands star Jacinta Chandler Goodyear and Melton’s Nicole Martin are also helping out.
Competition organiser Angela Dempsey said there had been a lot of interest from girls wanting to get involved.
She said Riddell, Hanging Rock and Kyneton all had strong numbers interested and could possibly field their own teams.
Other teams will comprise girls from nearby clubs. Players who are new to the sport and aren’t associated with a club can also sign on.
The five-week competition starts on November 2 at the Riddells Creek Recreation Reserve from 4.45pm.
A free come and train day will be held at the reserve on Sunday from 10am. Details: 0412 204 975.
