Gisborne Cricket Club is running a second all abilities come and try session this Sunday.

After a successful first session, the Dragons are hoping to get some more interest in the sessions ahead of possibly rolling out a full program next year.

Dragons’ president Andrew Headberry said 15 children with a range of disabilities from across Sunbury and Macedon Ranges attend the first session.

“The theme of the day was just to have fun and judging by the smiles on the kids faces we are pretty sure that we achieved the goal,” Headberry said.

“The day was a huge success with all of the kids having a great time and showcasing their skills.”

More than 20 club members including the under-17s team and members of the senior team helped run the session.

The sessions are run jointly with AA Sports in Ballarat and Cricket Victoria who have been running a successful program for many years in Ballarat.

Headberry said the program was a big step for the club.

“This was another huge step taken by the Gisborne Cricket Club in being a leader in inclusiveness in sport with the all abilities program adding to the mens, juniors, adult women’s and junior women’s teams.

“Our aim is to be a truly inclusive club where anyone can come and play and have the support they need to succeed whatever their goals may be.

“Our plan was to run the two ‘come and try’ sessions this season with a view to rolling out a full program next year which would include 6-8 sessions across the season.

“We would love to see some of our kids from the program develop and being able to transition in to some of the pathway cricket programs that are available. We are also equally just as happy to see the kids come along and have fun.”

The second session starts on Sunday at 10am at Gardiner Reserve.
