Final term not enough for South Morang

A last-quarter comeback by South Morang fell short in the Northern Football League women’s division 2 elimination final.

For the first three quarters, Montmorency had complete control of the game, kicking nine goals while keeping the Lions goal-less.

The Lions added some respectability to the scoreboard with six last-quarter goals.

It wasn’t enough, with the Magpies winning 9.6 (60)-6.6 (42).

Shenay Reeves and Caitlyn Marmo kicked two goals apiece for the Lions.

Experienced duo Cassie Hurst and Tara Chetcuti were named the best in the loss.

While the defeat brings the Lions’ season to an end, the Magpies will face  La Trobe University in a knock-out semi-final.

West Preston-Lakeside will face VU Western Spurs in the other semi-final, with a spot in the grand final on the line.

In division 1, Bendigo will face Keilor for a grand final berth.

The Thunder needed overtime to overcome VU Spurs, after the teams were locked on 4.7 (31) at the end of regular time in their qualifying final.

The Thunder did all the scoring in the extra time, winning 6.9 (45)-4.7 (31).

The Spurs will face Diamond Creek, which defeated Darebin in their elimination final 6.5 (41)-2.7 (19).

In division 3, both weekend finals were low-scoring affairs.

St Mary’s moved through to a semi-final clash with Bundoora, which had a bye, with a 20-point win against VU Western Spurs.

St Mary’s winning 4.11 (35)-2.3 (15).

An inaccurate Eltham still did enough to easily beat Greensborough, 4.18 (42)-2.4 (16).
