It was the case of a fast starting Sunbury Jets on the weekend in Big V women’s state championship division.
In both the Jets’ games, firstly on Saturday night against Diamond Valley, and then against Hume City Broncos on Sunday, they were out of the blocks fast.
On Saturday night, the Jets outscored the Eagles 23-4 in the first quarter, going on to win 78-57.
Courtney Duever top scored with 22 points, with four of the five starters scoring double figures, as the team shot 50 per cent from the field.
On Sunday, they led the Broncos by 14 points at half time. That would be the final margin, with the Jets winning 78-64.
Again it was Duever who top scored, this time with 35 points. She also had 12 rebounds and four steals.
Jets’ coach Kennedy Kerema said it was another positive weekend for the Jets, who sit on top of the ladder undefeated.
He said the fast starts in games was a lot about what they had done during the week.
“The attitude the players have for preparation throughout the week is a key,” he said. “They’re getting through training sessions and doing scouting coming into games.
“We’re winning well now, but we know we need to continue to win when it counts later in the season.”
Kereama said there was still a number of areas they needed to continue to improve as the season goes on.
“We’re striving to be the best we can and there’s some improvement to come and areas to touch up on,” he said.
“We’re not playing our best basketball and hopefully we’re playing our best come the end of the year and playoffs.
“Defensively we can get a bit better as we have our lapses in concentration.
“We have a killer instinct, but I would like to see it more consistently, closing out teams.
“If we’re up by 20 points at half time, I want to win by more than that and try and win every single quarter.”
The Jets continue to get minutes into their bench players, in a positive for the side and Kereama.
Kereama said Rebecca Van Kuyk, who missed the weekend’s matches with an ankle injury, was expected to return next week.
The Jets are set for another big weekend when they take on Knox Raiders. The Raiders sit second on the ladder, having only lost one game.
It wasn’t such a good weekend for the men’s side which was thrashed by Geelong Supercats.
The Jets started well and led by three points at quarter time, but lost the game in the second quarter when they were outscored 27-9.
The Supercats blew out the lead in the second half winning 100-62.
