East Sunbury continues to build its game in Essendon District Football League division 2.
After two losses to start the season, the Thunder made it a second win in a row on Saturday to even the ledger.
While facing bottom side Keilor Park, Thunder coach Glenn Hopkins said it was still important to make sure they were playing their game.
The Thunder won 17.20 (122)-6.2 (38).
“It was a good win,” Hopkins said. “It’s a good time to ramp things up.
“We played the way we wanted to play. We moved the ball really well between the arcs.
“We had some more handball receives and moved the ball across the ground.
“For us it was important to take our game plan and take the game on, which we try and do every game.”
While Hopkins was happy with the performance, he said there was still plenty of work to do.
One key area is the use of the ball into the forward line. He said it was a combination of the midfielders’ ball use and the forwards not getting into the right positions.
“Our kicking to the forwards wasn’t good,” he said.
“Our forwards have to work on their craft and get to better spots.
“We kicked to packs more often than not. It’s another thing to work on.”
While the forwards struggled to get shots on goal, the midfielders played their role.
Kamen Ogilvie kicked four goals, while skipper Lucas Shaw kicked two goals, running forward from the midfield.
Hopkins said it was important for the side to have their midfielders kick goals.
Shane Lindsay was the Thunder’s best, dominating his side of the ground on the wing.
Diquan Williams was another standout, proving plenty of run off the half-back line.
East Sunbury this week face Moonee Valley, which is coming off its first win of the season, thrashing Jacana.
The Thunder then face Jacana, before having their first bye.
Hopkins said they would find out more about themselves the next couple of weeks.
“Moonee Valley is a good test for us and we will get to use their new rooms.
“They are celebrating indigenous round, and we’ve got a few indigenous players so it’s special for them too.
“Hopefully we can get the win.”
In other results, the Sunbury Kangaroos remain undefeated after beating Hadfield in a thriller. The Kangaroos came from six points behind at three-quarter time to get the 12.8 (80)-11.11 (77) win.
Ruckman Brenton Sutherland was named the Kangaroos’ best.
