It was a return to form for Club Sunbury in a big way on the weekend in the Bowls Victoria weekend pennant, division 1, section 1.
After returning to the winners list in the previous round after a rough patch, Club Sunbury came away with two important wins on the weekend against Bundoora RSL 2 and Blackburn,
On Saturday, Club Sunbury was on the road against Bundoora.
The side was able to get away late to come away with a 78 (16)-64 (2).
Club Sunbury’s David Glennon said the side had control of the game through most of the day.
“Sunbury was in front all day,” he said.
“The game was close towards the end, but the last four to five ends made it a double digit result.”
Mark Cowan’s rink won 19-15, Lee Wesley’s rink had a 25-10 win and Sebastian Pretty’s rink came away with a 25-11 win.
It was an uncharacteristic bad day for Marc Bullows’ rink which lost 28-9.
Glennon said Wesley, Cowan, Mark Ryan and Pretty were the standouts in that win.
Club Sunbury was back in action on Sunday against Blackburn at home.
It was another good win, coming away with the points 90 (15)-60 (3)
Glennon said Club Sunbury led all day before pulling away late for a second straight day.
Pretty was the only skip to get two wins for the weekend, winning 26-9. Bullows bounced back from the day before and won 31-16.
Wesley’s rink tied 17-all, while Cowan’s rink lost 18-16.
Glennon said Bullows, Ryan, Akasha Fortune and Pretty were the standouts.
The performances of Pretty in recent weeks have been a key for the side.
“Sebastian has been really good since changing roles and taking on the skipping,” Glennon said.
“He is in some really good form and has been winning by some big margins.”
The two wins consolidate Club Sunbury’s second spot. They are on 169, 36 points behind ladder leaders Lilydale.
Glennon said they were in a good position heading into the last few rounds.
“We will not catch Lilydale,” he said.
“We’re on 169 and Kingsbury and Middle Park are on 142… that’s virtually two games ahead now.
“We face Middle Park this week in another big game.
“It’s good to get a few results back after a rough patch and consolidate second spot.”
Meanwhile in the Central Highlands Bowls Division top grade, there were another couple of close matches.
Having been some thrillers in recent weeks, there were another two matches on Saturday that went down to the wire.
Ladder leaders Romsey snuck home against Kyneton Golf, 53 (14)-52 (2).
Kyneton also won a thriller, beating Kilmore 62 (14)-57 (2).
In the other match that went ahead, Broadford beat Gisborne 64 (14)-47 (2).
Trentham and Lancefield shared the points with the match not going ahead due to the green being unplayable.
The results mean Romsey has extended its lead at the top of the ladder.
