Coach aims to take Gisborne to next level

New Gisborne coach Danny Moore is looking forward to the challenge of leading the side for the rest of the FFV state league 4 west season.

Moore was appointed to the role two weeks ago, stepping in to replace Danny Ciantar who stood down from the role, due to differences with the committee.

Moore said the opportunity to coach the Sky Blues was something he was enjoying so far.

“I caught wind of a coaching change that was occurring at the club,” he said.

“For me it’s the next step in progressing my coaching career. The next step forward was taking on a senior coaching role.

“I inquired and things moved quickly. I’m grateful to be given a crack and the club as a whole has welcomed me with open arms.”

While Moore is joining the Sky Blues for the first time, he has been keeping an eye on the side over the last few years.

Moore has been heavily involved at Sunbury United, having played, coached the reserves and been on the committee.

Several past United players are now playing with Gisborne.

“Part of the attraction was the familiar faces,” he said. “A large portion of the playing group I have played with at Sunbury or coached.

“I still followed them loosely … It’s good to see guys who had moved on doing well.”

Moore said while it can be difficult taking over coaching a side mid-season, he was hopeful his knowledge of the group would help.

He said he had already hit the ground running.

The Sky Blues lost in Moore’s first game, after conceding a goal in the 11th minute of injury time in a heartbreaking affair.

On Saturday, the Sky Blues match against Altona North was postponed due to Gisborne’s pitch being under water.

Meanwhile, Sunbury United’s match against Williamstown was also postponed due to the weather. The next catch up round is scheduled for August 10.
