Bowlers from six teams managed to negotiate the rain and windy weather in the Centrals Highlands Bowls division 1 on Saturday.

With most sport in the area called off, bowlers bucked the trend at Bacchus Marsh, Kyneton and Woodend.

Travelling to Bacchus Marsh, Trentham was easily beaten in what nevertheless turned out to be the closest match of the round.

Bacchus Marsh won three rinks in the 112 (16)-82 (2) win on a day when the sun was out one minute and there was rain the next.

Trentham won the fourth rink 24-22, but only after a late comeback from 10 shots down.

Reigning premier Kyneton Golf finally got its first win for the season. After an upset loss against Trentham the previous week, Golf was back to the form that earned it the past two premierships.

Romsey was the unlucky side to face them. Golf won all four rinks, in a massive 125 (18)-78 (0) win. Adrian Plowman’s rink won 42-19.

Kyneton’s win against Woodend was almost as emphatic. On the back of Craig Vincent’s rink, which won 44-6, Kyneton won 115 (16)-69 (2).

The match between unbeaten sides Lancefield and Gisborne ended in a draw after it was washed out. Both teams were awarded nine points. Lancefield remains on top of the ladder, four points clear of Gisborne, with Bacchus Marsh a further two points back.

Kyneton rounds out the top four, with all teams but Romsey having at least one win in the first three rounds.

All matches in divisions 2 and 3 were washed out.

Meanwhile, Lancefield’s Bev Holmes and Michael Linehan have become the competition’s over-60 singles champions.

The finals of the competition were held at Bacchus Marsh on Thursday.

It was the first time Holmes had competed in the over-60 age group. She defeated three Bacchus Marsh opponents on the way to the title, beating Joyce Porter 21-14 in the final.

Linehan had to come from behind against Gisborne’s John Bell. Scores were level at 20-20 before Linehan drew a close ball directly behind the jack to win.
