Bundoora’s hard work in the pre-season has paid off with the team winning its first two matches of the Northern Football League women’s division 3 season.
Fielding a women’s side for the first time this year, the Bulls were unsure what to expect.
After a win against St Mary’s, on Sunday, they made it two from two by defeating VU Spurs 2.9 (21)-2.0 (12).
Bulls coach Lyndal Hayes said that with division 3 consisting of mostly new sides, the season was an unknown quantity.
“It’s been great as we haven’t known what we were to be up against,” she said.
“We went 1-1 in our practice matches and the club has no expectations this year.
“We want to give it a go … [with] a lot of new sides, we could be In with a good chance.”
Hayes said about half the players in the Bulls’ squad had never played.
Many of the squad had connections with the club, including several daughters of past and present players, girlfriends and sisters among those in the side.
Chloe Moorcroft, daughter of former Essendon player and now Bundoora star Gary Moorcroft, is part of the side.
Hayes said Gary was helping out with the coaching.
Among the players with connections to club who have pulled on the boots, include Rainbow Ebert, Bridgette Taylor-Gray and Ashleigh and Brittany Del Romano.
For Hayes, it was an easy decision to take up the coaching role at the Bulls.
“I played juniors at Bundoora,” she said. “I played in the late 1990s with Parkside and played with Albion and at Darebin for a few years.
“I spent three years at Sunbury including the 2015 premiership and then thought I’d give coaching a go.
“I was the first female to play at the club and now I’m the first coach of the women’s side.”
In other results, Greensborough defeated Mernda and St Mary’s was too strong for Eltham.
In division 2, West Preston Lakeside, South Morang and VU Western Spurs had wins.
In division 1, Bendigo Thunder, Darebin and Keilor had wins.
