Rain dashes Sunbury hopes

Rain proved to be Sunbury’s greatest opponent on Saturday in Bowls Victoria pennant division 1, section 1.

Facing bottom side Altona (2), Sunbury looked set for a big win when it was up in three of the four rinks when rain set in.

Once rain hit, it was the end of play – Sunbury had to settle for a draw and nine points.

Sunbury’s David Glennon said it was disappointing not to come away with the win.

He said they had been hoping for a big victory to try to close the gap on the top sides.

“We were well in front when it was called,” he said. “We were heading for 16 points at least, if not the whole 18 points. It would have been a nice start to the second half of the season.”

Carla Krizanic’s rink was the stand-out on the day – up by more than 15 shots when the match was called off.

Sunbury remains in third spot, with all but two of the weekend’s matches ending in draws.

They are 15 points behind ladder leader Moonee Valley, which is a point clear of Glenroy.

Sunbury will face fifth-placed Melton this week in a crucial match in its endeavours to further cement a spot in the top four.

Sunbury’s two division 3 sides both grabbed vital wins against Werribee and moved away from the relegation zone.

It was a busy week for Sunbury bowlers.

Elise Cowan took out the club’s ladies singles final, breaking a run of three titles won by Krizanic.

Both women were last week named in the Victorian side to take on South Australia in a test series.

Brad Janner will face Wayne Long in the club’s men’s final. Janner is going for a fourth straight Sunbury title.

During the week, Lisa Trewarne and Lachie Morison were both part of the Victorian under-18 team in the test series against South Australia.

Victoria won the girls’ series 2-1, while it was a clean sweep in the boys, with Victoria winning 3-0.
