A light on horizon as Dogs rebuild

The results might not show it, but Gisborne has surpassed its expectations in the Bendigo Football League.

Having lost more than half of last year’s senior squad in the off season, it was always going to be a tough start for the Bulldogs. Add to that mix a draw that had the team meeting last year’s five finalists in the opening six weeks.

On Saturday, the Bulldogs suffered their fifth straight loss, to Eaglehawk 21.14 (140) – 7.5 (47).

But their coach, Brad Spear, said his side had been more competitive than he’d expected early on.

“We’ve had such a young team up against last year’s finalists. The real positive is we’ve not given up and we’ve fought out these games until the end.

“It’s been a pretty tough draw, but it means we’ll play them all again towards the back end of the season and see how we go against them and gauge our improvement.”

He said the longer the season went the more consistency the playing group would have.

“I think we’ve got to expect inconsistency. As they mature we will become physically and mentally stronger.

“It will come and we have to be patient. We’re heading in the right direction and in every game we’re making a step forward.

“As a coach it’s important to keep them positive. The fact is we’ve been competitive against the top sides so there are positives.”

Spear said a number of his younger players had thrived on being given extra responsibility.

He said the club was also mindful of asking them to do too much. Many mix playing senior football and under-18s to play with their mates.

“Nick Doolan and Matt Wilson are both under-18s and were among our best players last week.

“Tom Cassidy and Jack Scanlon have gone well, above expectations. They’ve both been solid contributors up forward.”

The Bulldogs sit ninth on the ladder ahead of this week’s interleague break and are one of three sides without a win after the first five rounds.

Meanwhile, Kyneton suffered a 34-point loss to Kangaroo Flat.

After leading at half-time, the Tigers were goalless in the third quarter and it turned the game in the Kangaroos’ favour.

The Roos kept the momentum going to win 17.19 (121) – 13.9 (97).
