Camberwell Dragons’ fire was extinguished not once but twice by Sunbury Jets in Big V division 1 at the weekend.
Both the Jets’ men’s and women’s sides took on the Dragons and, as expected, both had big wins.
The men did battle first at Boardman Reserve on Saturday night, with the Jets making the better start against the bottom side.
And with a 16-point lead at the main break, Jets’ coach Andrew Summerville was able to give some of his starters a rest in the second half.
The Jets were unable to increase their lead in the second half but still went on to win 78-62.
Ish Sanders top-scored for the Jets with 21 points, while Mitchell Newton chipped in with 18 and pulled down 11 rebounds. Nathan Baker was the other player in double figures, grabbing 12 points and 11 rebounds.
The win moved the Jets back into the top eight, with a 50 per cent win record after 14 matches.
On Sunday, the Jets’ women travelled to Camberwell and continued their unbeaten start to the season, with a 21- point drubbing of the Dragons.
The Jets started the slower of the two sides and found themselves trailing by a point at quarter-time.
They stepped it up after the break and were up five points at half-time. The lead increased to 16 in the third quarter before the Jets went on to win 74-53.
Monique Stevens top-scored for the Jets with 24 points, while Courtney Duever and Emma Mahady also reached double figures.
With 11 wins from 11 matches, the Jets now sit two games clear of Geelong Supercats on top of the ladder with a game in hand.
In men’s youth league division 1, the Jets defeated Camberwell 85-71.
The women’s youth league side lost 75-61 to Mornington Breakers.
All teams have this weekend off as Big V hosts its first origin contest. City and Country men’s and women’s sides will do battle in Shepparton. The Jets’ Mitchell Newton is part of the metro team, while Josh Grabham will represent Country.
