Bendigo FL name interleague squad

Six Gisborne and five Kyneton players have been named in the initial Bendigo Football League interleague squad for this year’s match against the Outer East Football Netball League on May 18.

Gisborne playing coach Clinton Young headlines the Bulldogs players named, with former AFL-listed players Matt Goodyear and Pat McKenna also selected.

Trent Crosbie and Jack Scanlon and Brad Bernacki round out the Bulldogs selections.

The Bulldogs sit 2-0 after the opening two rounds.

For the Tigers, Rhys Magin, Max O’Sullivan, Patrick McCarthy, Josh Govan and Leyton Chisholm are in the squad.

Overall, 57 players have been named in the squad, including former Essendon and Port Adelaide forward Angus Monfries.

The squad will have their first training session tonight, with the final team to be picked on the Thursday before the game.

For the first time, the squad has included a “Futures Squad” among the overall squad.

The “Futures Squad” will see one emerging talented player from each club involved in the elite training program to further assist with their football development.

Bernacki, who was a star at junior level, and Chisholm are the players from Gisborne and Kyneton respectively named in the “Futures Squad”, having been nominated by their clubs.

Interleague coach Darryl Wilson said the squad had a good mix of both experience and youth, with the players getting behind making themselves available for the game.
