100 up for Jaxon Mobilio

Jaxon Mobilio kicked his 100th goal in the last game of the regular season.

At the age of 19, East Sunbury’s Jaxon Mobilio has joined the 100 goals in a season club.

Playing in Essendon District Football League’s division 2 under-18.5s competition, Mobilio kicked his 100th goal in the final game of the regular season.

Going into the game having kicked 86 goals, Mobilio didn’t think he was a chance of getting to the 100 mark.

Luck went the Thunder’s way, with Westmeadows just one player off having to forfeit the match.

“I walked in and thought I would kick a few goals and maybe have a bit of fun,” Mobilio said. “All the boys kept kicking it to me and I still didn’t think I would get it.”

He said that when he had five goals at quarter-time, coach Daryl Cartwright urged the Thunder players to make him their target.

“I had 10 at half-time and kicked the four in the third quarter,” he said.

Once the milestone was out of the way, the focus went back on the game, which the Thunder won by 260 points.

“Once I got it, Daryl brought it in and the focus was all on finals and structures,” Mobilio said. “I sat on the bench for a while after it – I was knackered.”

The 100-goal achievement comes despite missing five matches through other sides forfeiting and playing three matches in the East Sunbury seniors. He kicked four goals in the senior matches.

Mobilio was quick to praise his teammates for the role they played in helping him reach the milestone.

“Over the off-season, they did a lot of recruiting and picked up a lot of players,” he said. “A lot of effort has gone into being on the track.

“Last year, I kicked a lot [63 goals], but this year the team really clicked.”

Among his teammates this season is his brother Corey Mobilio, who moved across from Sunbury Lions.

“I had been at Lions, but we played all our junior football here [East Sunbury],” he said.

“My mates decided to get an under-18s team running at East Sunbury and I came back to play. Corey came across this year.”

Mobilio, who plays more a half-forward or forward flank role and prefers to kick running goals, says the focus remains where it has always been this season – on winning a premiership.

The Thunder went through the regular season undefeated before losing their semi-final to East Keilor by 10 points on Saturday.

The Thunder will play Roxburgh Park this weekend in the preliminary final.

“I’ve said it before – I would trade it all in for a premiership,” Mobilio said.
