Sunbury’s brightest young readers have reached a significant milestone.
Four students read 1000 Books Before School, and received their certificate at a special library storytime.
The initiative, run by Hume Libraries, encourages children to read 100 books before they start school, to begin their journey as lifelong learners.
Throughout the journey, children will receive special stickers after every 100 books read, plus a reward at 100, 250, 750 and 1000 books.
At the end of the program, kids and their families are invited to a special storytime session to commemorate their achievement.
Parents and carers can read to their children in any language and read the same books many times over as well, making it a fun way to engage your child with reading.
“We know that reading to kids every day is crucial for the healthy development of language, a love of reading, and for creating bonds between children and their carers,” Hume mayor Jarrod Bell said.
“The 1000 Books Before School program is a great way to encourage parents and carers to engage in this activity more regularly by making it a regular habit at home, and putting kids in the best position to start school with pre-literacy skills to hit the ground running.
“We are so proud of council’s Hume Libraries team who are now in their tenth year of the 1000 Books Before School program, getting more than 5000 children involved and setting up an incredible legacy for young readers in Hume.”
The Sunbury event was held at the Sunbury Hume Global Learning Centre on June 30, with events in Broadmeadows and Craigieburn to follow in July.
