Young people across the Macedon Ranges are being encouraged to take apply for a youth council to help empower them.

The Macedon Youth Council, now in its second year, comprises of 12 young people aged 16-22, to help build a better understanding of government and play a more active role in public life.

The council will meet five times during the year to discuss local issues, learn about the democratic system and how young people can participate in decision-making processes.

A visit to Parliament House is also included as part of the council’s activities.

Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said issues raised by 2019’s youth council included local advocacy, single use plastic bags, political apathy, youth mental health and renewable energy.

“We are so lucky to have such incredibly talented young people in our community,” she said.

“The Macedon Youth Council is a chance for our future leaders to bring their ideas directly to me and to build their skills.

“Now more than ever, our young people are crying out to have their voices heard I’m proud to be able to provide young people in our community with a platform and the knowledge to raise issues that are important to them.”

Applications close on Sunday, March 29.
