Woodend residents are being called on to help homeless people stave off the winter chill by donating to Rotary’s blanket drive.
Woodend Rotary, in conjunction with Melbourne Central Rotary, is collecting blankets, sleeping bags, coats, scarves and hats to distribute to people living on the streets.
Woodend Rotary member Grant Hocking said the blanket drive started three years ago, with Woodend residents donating five cubic metres of donations in the first year.
“The majority of these items were donated from local residents, with many being regular donors,” he said.
Mr Hocking said that most of the donated items were taken to Youth Projects in Hosier Lane, Melbourne which provides showers and laundry facilities, as well as meals and use of computers for homeless people.
Some donations are also distributed to local charities on request.
Donations can be dropped off at Woodend library or Mort and Pestle, 2/130 High Street, until the end of June.
