Young people with autism can build robots – and develop their social skills – as part of a workshop at Woodend.

The event, organised by Macedon Ranges council’s youth engagement program (YEP) for 11-16-year-olds on the autism spectrum, will give kids the chance to learn how to create their own robotic device in a safe environment.

YEP, which is supported by staff at Cobaw Community Health, meets every Thursday during school terms.

Linda, whose son William was among those who pushed for an autism-specific group for young people, says YEP promotes stress-free interaction amongst the kids, who typically struggle with social skills.

‘‘They often don’t have a big friends group at school … this gives them somewhere they can interact with each other.

‘‘They don’t feel like they’re being judged. They just get on together.’’

The workshop is at Woodend Neighbourhood House from 4-6pm on October 8.

Cost: $10.
