The Woodend Golf Club had a tee-rific win at the Golf Australia Awards last week, taking home the trophy for Victorian Club of the Year.
Club secretary James O’Brien said the club had put in the yards over the past few years to be what it is today.
“We’ve worked really hard… to ensure that our club is well and truly part of the community, and to make golf as affordable and as accessible to everyone,” Mr O’Brien said.
“[As well as] to present our course as a public asset that the whole community can benefit from.”
He said it had been a pleasant surprise to win, with so many other great community clubs doing great things.
“It’s a tribute to our committee and our members and course superintendent Grant Davies, about the quality of our course,” he said.
“We also had terrific success on the course this year, with three pennant teams winning grand finals, and also getting the commitment from Macedon Ranges council for $680,000 to upgrade our club rooms.
“We’re in a strong position but we want to make sure our club can continue to serve our community and continue to drive improvements as far as we can.”
Macedon Ranges mayor Jennifer Anderson paid congratulations to the club at a council meeting last week, saying the club provided “a space for the whole community to enjoy being in, whether you’re playing golf or not”.
Mr O’Brien said the win was likely because of activities of the club both on and off the course.
“We’re all volunteers and we try and do our best, we love the place and we are really keen to make sure we go from strength to strength,” he said.
