Wildlife safety sign push

A Hepburn councillor is calling for towns, including those in the Macedon Ranges, to erect signs to encourage drivers to slow down on roads with high levels of wildlife.

Cr Licia Kokocinski was responding to calls from a Cherokee resident last week to introduce dual speed zones on some roads.

John Power told Star Weekly he wanted dusk-to-dawn dual speed zones in areas of high wildlife activity.

Cr Kokocinski said the idea had merit, but wasn’t enforceable in the fight against animal roadkill levels in the region, which she described as “pretty horrific”.

“Different speed zones already cause confusion and cynicism among drivers,” she said.

“Another option may be to lobby cafes and other eateries where people generally congregate on day trips, to have messages on windows and on the back of advertising to remind patrons of why they love coming through these beautiful areas.”
