Five young reporters from Salesian College Rupertswood are off to Samoa to cover the Commonwealth Youth Games.

After close to a year of media training, year 10 students Hannah Graham, Nikhil Hendricks, Matt Collett, Jamie Walsh and Stacey Duffy (pictured) will fly out on Wednesday.

They will interview athletes, create videos and write articles about the excitement of the Games, which will attract thousands of participants across nine sports.

Another student, Samuel Warwick, took part in training with the Reporters’ Academy but won’t make the trip.

The academy is a youth sports media organisation, with participants invited to form the official Games reporting team.

The Salesian team’s extensive training included interviewing techniques, writing tips and video and photography pointers.

Matt, who plans to pursue a career in sports broadcasting, says it’s a great opportunity.

‘‘We’ll be working from 7am-11pm, but the opportunity to put our skills into practice and build our networks is massive,’’ he says.
